Pay the Reckoning is a trio of instrumentalists from Chattanooga, Tennessee who perform authentic traditional Irish dance melodies on the Wooden Flute, Tin Whistle, Fiddle, Tenor Banjo, the Irish Bouzouki, and Bodhrán, and sing rousing Irish folk songs for an experience of revelry and merriment no less convivial than any public house on the Emerald Isle.

Mirabai Bellydance: 1:00 p.m.

Mirabai Bellydance is a creative dance collective that seeks to share and represent the spirituality, power, and strength of the ancient feminine art of bellydance. Based in Chattanooga, TN since 2008, Mirabai Bellydance combines various styles of tribal dance to create a cohesive fusion that demonstrates the beauty, grace and fluidity of this art. The name “Mirabai” मीराcomes from a mystical Hindu poetess from the sixteenth century. The name represents the fulfillment, empowerment and self-acceptance all women can find in their expression through dance.

Mirabai is the sponsor and producer of the annual Fringe Benefit: Empowering Women Through Dance. Each year, The Fringe Benefit showcases the talent, skill and diversity of the Chattanooga bellydance scene, as well as popular local music. One hundred percent of the funds raised through The Fringe Benefit goes to a local charity that specializes in serving women in need. In its first three years, The Fringe Benefit has raised almost $3,000 for women’s charities.

Brian Ashley Jones is a soulful singer, accomplished guitarist, and versatile Americana songwriter whose compositions have been placed in film and television and recorded by a variety of other performing artists. Jones’ songs find influence in the guitar-driven Country, Blues and Bluegrass that he absorbed in his hometown, Spartanburg, South Carolina. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Brian performs internationally at festivals and concert series and leads seminars for music education programs, music business conferences, and NSAI chapters around the USA.

Lou Wamp’s slide rules! Instrumental prowess and great stage presence showcase fine original material based in bluegrass, swing, & swampy blues. From haunting to barn-burning, (bring your waltz partner or your clogging shoes – or both), the show features Lou’s incredible dobro and slide talents plus a band of players that can go there with him. Lou is a 25+ year veteran of the bluegrass stage having toured with such nationally known acts as James Monroe & the Midnight Ramblers and Blue Moon Rising. Wamp’s band of hot pickers also includes Brad Frazier on lead vocals and guitar, Chris “Lightnin’” Hopkins on guitar, East Tennessee Fiddle Champion Meredith Goins, Jonathan Massengale on banjo like no one else, and Lynn Wamp rockin’ the bass. With a focus on original instrumental acoustic music and smooth vocal numbers within a variety of genres, Bluetastic Fangrass is too broad to stereotype but sure to appeal to many audiences. It’s a slightly dyslexic look at Fantastic Bluegrass. And if it’s true “there’s no money above the fourth fret” then these guys and gals are bound for the poorhouse! But what a ride!

The Sweet Georgia Sound, Chattanooga’s favorite Big Band, is a 20-member ensemble that has played in the Chattanooga area since 1994. SGS plays a variety of listening, dance, and ballroom dance music that includes classic and modern big band, swing, Latin, and waltz tunes.

The 3rd annual Arts in the Park Festival is to be held on Monday, September 3rd, 2012 at the Veterans Memorial Park in Collegedale, Tennessee. This event will celebrate the arts, including a showcase of artwork by students from area schools. Live music & entertainment will be featured throughout the day.

What: Arts in the Park Festival 2012
When: Monday, September 3rd: 10am-6pm
Where: Veterans Memorial Park, Collegedale TN
Who: Juried Arts & Crafts Vendors

This is a juried event; all prospective vendors will be required to submit photos of their works suitable for the arts panel to accurately review; only a limited number of exhibitors from each product category will be accepted.

2012 Arts In The Park Student Art Contest Rules:

ELIGIBILITY

All Hamilton County and area Private Schools – Grades 6 – 12. All eligible artwork will be completed by student during the 2012 calendar year.

FORMS OF ART

Art forms include paintings, drawings, wood art, stone art, pottery, metal art, leather art, photography, beadwork, glass art, basketry, pet art, recycled art, mixed media art, and computer art. All art submittals will be family-friendly. Artwork will be suitable for public display.

ART DEVELOPMENT

Art must have been developed during the same calendar year as the festival. Items must be handmade. The handcrafted component must dominate the commercial component, and the commercial components must be transformed in a way that makes the work unique. Items must be of original, unique work or design. The starting material must be significantly altered and enhanced by the artisan.

ART SUBMITTAL

Student artwork will be physically submitted on the morning of Festival; Monday, September 3rd at 8am for set-up. The Festival will provide tents, tables and metal screens for all students’ artwork. Please follow these requirements for submittal:

• “S” hooks will be provided for artwork to be hung on wire screens. Artwork should be strung with wire on the back or in a manner that accepts an “S” hook for hanging.

• Tables will be provided for sculpture or other displays not hang-able. Art submissions may include table stands, easels or other art support devices to display student artwork. Easels (not supplied) are encouraged for table top pieces or those which are not strung with wire.

• Each piece of art should be labelled for display with: Title of artwork (optional), Artist name, School, Grade when completed. The festival will also provide art identification labels if needed.

ART JUDGING

The judges for the event will be comprised of local art professionals from the Association for Visual Arts. Judging will be based on originality, composition and style, with the winning art work reflecting the best overall art talent for each grade.

A first place, second place, and third place ribbon will be awarded to artwork for each grade. Schools will receive $100 for each first place winning entry. Cash prize awarded to the art program of winning schools.

ART PICK-UP

Judging will take place by 3 pm on the day of the festival (September 3rd), with an awards ceremony taking place at 4pm. School artwork will remain at the festival until 6 pm when they can be picked up by schools or art students. The festival is not responsible for artwork left after the festival closes at dusk.
